When is Akshaya Tritiya 2022?

Akshaya Tritiya, also known as Parashurama Jayanti, is an annual festival observed by all Hindus and Jains in India. The Jains usually commemorate the first Tirthankara's ending his first year of asceticism by drinking sugarcane poured into his cupped hands. On the other hand, the Hindus celebrate the birth of Lord Parasurama, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The holiday is considered very important and therefore celebrated with great devotion across the country.

Who was Parashurama?

According to a legend, an evil king ruled Mahishmati Nagri region in central India, and the goddess earth wasn't happy with the evil deeds. Therefore, she asked Lord Vishnu for help. He promised to be born as a son to Renuka and Sage Jamadagni. Soon, Lord Vishnu reincarnated as the great warrior by the name Parashurama. He fought the evil king, defeated him, and destroyed his kingdom, thus restoring peace on earth.

When is Akshaya Tritiya?

Akshaya Tritiya comes on the third day of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Vaishakh, according to the Hindu calendar. The holiday falls between April and May of the Gregorian calendar.

Is Akshaya Tritiya a public day?

Akshaya Tritiya is only celebrated by Hindus and Jains and not a public holiday. It is mostly observed in the states of Maharashtra, Kerala, Goa, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Uttar Pradesh.

What is open or closed on Akshaya Tritiya?

Akshaya Tritiya is not a public holiday and, therefore, not a day off to India's general population. Government offices, banks, post offices, organisations, and most businesses remain open on Akshaya Tritiya. Akshaya Tritiya is a lucky day to Hindus, and any project undertaken on this day has a high possibility of prospering. The Hindu community believes this is the day Lord Ganesha, the god of wisdom, started writing Mahabharata.

As a woman in Maharashtra, Akshaya Tritiya is of very great importance. It is common for girls, virgins, married, and widows to pray for their husbands, the men in their lives, and those they may get engaged to in the future. The women then exchange turmeric and vermicelli as the two are considered a symbol of marital bliss, longevity, and well-being of their husbands. They also share germinating grams, fruits, and Indian sweets to wish each other well in their marriages.

It is a tradition as a devotee to fast from the night before Akshaya Tritiya. You will then need to visit the temple and offer your prayers and worship Lord Vishnu as you seek his blessings.
