Dhanteras, also referred to as Dhanatrayodashi, is the first day of the five days of Diwali festival. The festival is derived from the words Dhana to mean wealth and Teras meaning the Hindu thirteenth day. On this day, Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kubera are worshipped as they are considered the gods of wealth and prosperity. Dhanteras is also a time to worship Lord Dhanvatari, considered to be the God of health and ayurvedic.

Government offices, banks, post offices, and most organisations remain open on Dhanteras. Things to do on Dhanteras

Dhanteras marks the beginning of the Hindu new year and remains a very important day for Most Hindus. It is also the start of the financial year for most Indian owned businesses. For this reason, Dhanteras is a day of worship and prayer to ask God for wealth and prosperity in the coming year.

If you live in the village, it is common to worship the cow and the calves being the primary source of income. Cows are considered sacred and therefore nurtured and adored with the utmost respect.

It is customary for people to clean their houses and whitewash them as this keeps them ready to welcome goddess Lakshmi and her wealth and prosperity. Remember to decorate the entrance to your home with colourful lanterns and Rangoli designs.

On the evening of Dhanteras, the ritual of Lakshmi puja is observed. You will need to keep the Diya lights burning as an honour of Lakshmi and Dhanvantari. Bhajans are also sung traditional sweets offered to goddess Lakshmi.

According to most Hindus, Dhanteras is the best time to buy expensive gifts, mainly made of gold or silver. You could also purchase precious jewellery, appliances, automobiles, and utensils to enhance your household prosperity.

If you are in South India, you can experience the Brahmin women making Marudhu, a type of traditional medicine offered during prayer, and eaten for breakfast on the third day of the Diwali festival. Families handover the recipes to their daughters as this medicine is believed to eliminate the imbalance of tridoshas in the body.
